1906 was a very important year for the Barber half dollar series, as it would be the first time that the Denver mint would have any coins in the annual lineup of half dollars. That would also be one of the very few years during which there would be four versions of business-strike Barber half dollars – Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco.

For the most part, none of the regular-issue Barber half dollars can be considered scarcer than usual. Though, of course, 1906 Barber half dollars are still scarce in the absolute sense. Like all Barber half dollars, they are rather difficult to find in grades of full Good or better and free of damage.

Here’s a rundown of 1906 Barber half dollars:

  • 1906 – 2,638,000; $18

  • 1906-D – 4,028,000; $18

  • 1906-O – 2,446,000; $23

  • 1906-S – 1,740,154; $20

  • 1906 proof – 675; $900

*Values are for coins in a grade of Good-4, unless otherwise noted.

You should have little difficulty in locating any of the four regular-strike 1906 Barber halves, though tracking down the 1906 proof half dollar will prove far more challenging. Remember, most Barber half dollar collections only include the business strike issues, so you can avoid the proof altogether and instead focus your time and energy on the scarcer Barber half dollar, of which there are several.
