1932 Indian Head Gold $10 Eagle

Amid the depths of the Great Depression, the United States Mint struck 4,463,000 Indian Head $10 gold eagles at the Philadelphia facility during 1932. While very few denominations were struck at the U.S. Mint in 1932, along with only the cent, quarter, and double eagle, the Indian Head eagle actually saw its highest-ever mintage during that year. While not priced any lower than other common Indian Head eagle issues, a nice specimen from 1932 should be really easy for coin collectors to find. Prices start at around $1,365 for an example graded Very Fine, and climb to about $1,484 for an entry-level uncirculated piece.

Remember that even though 1932 Indian Head eagles are considered quite common, especially as compared to other dates in the series, it is still counted among the pre-1934 U.S. gold coinage, all of which is scarce. Avoid buying cleaned, altered, or counterfeit Indian Head gold coins by purchasing them from a trusted coin dealer or another reputable source. Your best bet is to buy authenticated specimens that have been encapsulated by a third-party coin-grading firm.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who is probably most notable in the numismatic community for his double eagle design, was the artful mind behind the Indian Head gold eagle. 1932 would mark the last year before the U.S. was taken off the gold standard.
