1868 Liberty Head $10 Gold Eagle
Coin Info
1868 Liberty Head $10 gold eagles are extremely scarce coins, as relatively few were made and far fewer still survive to this day. These classic old U.S. gold coins were designed by United States Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht, who was the third person to serve in that role. In addition to designing the Liberty Head eagle, which was first minted in 1838, he also designed Seated Liberty coinage, which was struck from the late 1830s through early 1890s and remains popular with numismatists nowadays.
1868 $10 gold eagle coins contain 0.4806 ounces of gold and are purchased by bullion investors for their intrinsic metal content. The historic value of these coins is also worth noting. These coins are highly treasured numismatic collectibles and are worth far more than their gold content alone.
Here’s a breakdown of 1868 Liberty Head gold eagle $10 coin mintage figures and their values:
-
1868, 10,655 minted; $1,865
-
1868-S, 13,500; $2,664
*Values are for coins grading Very Fine 20.
It should be noted that the mintage figures listed above are actually significantly higher than the number of currently existing specimens of either issue. This is the case for all pre-1933 U.S. gold coins, which have been melted in huge numbers over the years and are now scarce.
