1880 Liberty Head $2.50 gold coins are classic coins that numismatists enjoy collecting. The Philadelphia mint was the only facility that produced quarter eagles in 1880, striking just 2,960 pieces that year. As is the case with all pre-1933 U.S. gold coins, only a small fraction of those coins exist today.

The value of an 1880 Liberty Head $2.50 gold coin in an average grade of Very Fine-20 is $582 , with uncirculated examples worth more than $1,500. 1880 quarter eagles are made from a standard “coin gold” composition of 90 percent gold and 10 percent copper. They also weigh 4.18 grams and measure 18 millimeters in diameter, which approximately compares to the breadth of a standard U.S. dime. 1874 gold quarter eagles contain a total of 0.1202 ounces of gold.

1880 quarter eagle gold coins were designed by Christian Gobrecht, who had served at one point as the U.S. Mint’s chief engraver. Gobrecht also gained wide acclaim in the numismatic community for designing Seated Liberty coinage, which ran from the late 1830s through 1891.
