1881 Liberty Head $2.50 quarter eagle gold coins are classic numismatic collectibles that remain popular today. The Philadelphia mint was the sole facility that produced quarter eagles in 1881, striking just 640 pieces that year. As is the case with all pre-1933 U.S. gold coins, only a small fraction of those coins exist today.

The value of an 1881 Liberty Head $2.50 gold coin in a grade of Very Fine-20 is $2,000, with uncirculated examples worth more than $10,000. 1881 quarter eagles are made from a standard “coin gold” composition of 90 percent gold and 10 percent copper and weigh 4.18 grams. With a width of 18 millimeters, they are nearly the diameter of a modern U.S. dime. 1881 gold quarter eagles contain a total of 0.1202 ounces of gold, a substantial amount of the precious metal that usually helps make this coin an attractive buy for bullion investors.

1881 quarter eagle gold coins were designed by Christian Gobrecht. He had served as the U.S. Mint’s chief engraver from 1840 through 1844 and is also well known in the numismatic community for designing Seated Liberty coinage, which ran from the late 1830s through 1891.
