1883 Liberty Head $2.50 quarter eagle gold coins are classic collectibles that are very popular with numismatists to this day. Only 1,920 were made, all at the Philadelphia mint, and are much scarcer today due to melting, a fate that most pre-1933 U.S. gold coins would face during the 20th century.

The approximate value of an 1883 Liberty Head $2.50 gold quarter eagle coin in a grade of Very Fine-20 is $1,000; uncirculated pieces sell for around $6,000 and up. 1883 quarter eagles are made from a standard “coin gold” composition of 90 percent gold and 10 percent copper and weigh 4.18 grams, with about 0.1202 ounces of gold in each coin. These quarter eagles have a diameter of 18 millimeters, meaning they are nearly the size of a modern U.S. dime. Needless to say, these gold coins are bought not just by coin collectors, but also by bullion investors.

1883 quarter eagle gold coins were designed by engraver Christian Gobrecht. He once served as the chief engraver of the U.S. Mint and would perhaps gain the most numismatic fame for designing Seated Liberty coinage, which ran from the late 1830s through 1891.
