Top 25 Most Valuable Walking Liberty Half Dollars Sold on eBay in June 2015

Walking Liberty half dollars are among the most beautiful silver coins the world has seen, and they remain popular with coin collectors today. While the obverse design, by Adolph A. Weinman, appears on American Silver Eagles, the original Walking Liberty coin series, produced from 1916 through 1947, is still widely collected by numismatists.

The most valuable Walking Liberty half dollars that sold on eBay in June 2015 include a wide array of dates. However, the most expensive Walking Liberty half dollar that traded hands on the online auction site sold for more than $15,000 – some $11,000 more than the second most expensive Walker that was purchased on eBay in June.

Here’s a rundown of the most expensive Walking Liberty half dollars that were sold on eBay in June 2015:

#1 – 1933-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar PCGS MS-67 – $15,250.00

This 1933-S Walking Liberty half dollar really hit it out of the park when it comes to the price it sold for. What makes it so valuable? For one, the 1933-S half dollar is a better date. Another thing that makes it pricey? It’s a pre-1934 uncirculated half dollar, and as many Walking Liberty enthusiasts know, all pre-1934 halves grading better than Very Fine-20 are scarce. The third thing that makes this piece so expensive is its shear Mint State grade – MS-67. That’s just about as good as it gets for pre-1934 Walking Liberty half dollars, grade wise.

#2 – 1936 Walking Liberty Half Dollar NGC Proof-66 – $3,850.00

1936 marks the first year of the modern United States proof coin, and this Walking Liberty half dollar is an exquisite representative of that first year of modern proof coinage. All 1930s U.S. proof coins are scarce, and they are even more elusive yet in MS-66, such as this coin that was certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.

#3 – 1945-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar PCGS MS-67+ – $2,950.00

While the 1945-D Walking Liberty half dollar may be a common coin as far as dates are concerned, any Walking Liberty half dollar is considerably scarce (and desirable) in MS-65. This piece scores more than two grading points higher than that. Top that with the fact this coin is in a slab from the Professional Coin Grading Service – a highly conservative certification firm – and this coin becomes a true winner.

#4 – 1936 Walking Liberty Half Dollar NGC Proof-65 – $2,402.00

This 1936 proof Walking Liberty half dollar is one grade point lower than the Prof-65 specimen, also graded by NGC, listed above for $3,800. While the one grade-point difference can account for a price variance of some $1,400, it’s also important to note that listing (and closing) times can affect the amount of the final bid that a coin receives on eBay.

#5 – 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar PCGS MS-65 – $2,200.00

This first-year issue in MS-65 is a great coin for any Walking Liberty half dollar enthusiast to own. A fairly decent number of 1916 Walking Liberty halves were produced, or 608,000 to be exact, but exist in much smaller numbers today and is scarcer still at this gem uncirculated grade threshold.

#6 – 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar PCGS MS-65 – $2,000.00

Here’s another 1916 PCGS MS-65 Walking Liberty half dollar. A very minor surface difference or simply lot closing times may have created the $200 gap between this coin and the one above. Remember, when buying any slabbed coin, don’t buy the grade on the label -- buy the coin in the slab.

#7 – 1921-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar PCGS VF-35 - $1,826.01

This key date Walking Liberty half dollar always draws a lot of attention when any of its representatives appear on eBay. The 1921-D half dollar is the lowest regular-issue, business-strike Walking Liberty half in the series, with just 208,000 pieces having been struck.

#8 – 1938-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar NGC MS-66 – $1,700.00

This semi-key Walking Liberty half dollar is sought after by series enthusiasts and is particularly scarce in the uncirculated grades. Only 491,600 of these 1938-D half dollars were made and far fewer survive today.

#9 – 1923-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar “Raw” – $1,656.89

The 1923-S Walking Liberty half dollar is a better-grade coin, and while this piece was sold raw and ungraded, it appears from both photos and the final price that was paid that bidders may have figured this specimen to grade in the Almost Uncirculated to Uncirculated range.

#10 – 1941 Walking Liberty Half Dollar PCGS Proof-67+ CAC Designated – $1,600.00

The final coin in the Top 10 portion of this list of most valuable Walking Liberty half dollars sold on eBay in June 2015 wraps up with a stunning proof Walking Liberty half dollar. This Proof-67 plus-grade proof with designation from the Certified Acceptance Corporation has amazing eye appeal and is overall a stellar representative of a Walking Liberty half dollar.
