Gouge on face of wheat penny

Was hoping for any opinions on how this wheat penny has a gouge across the nose yet still has the facial features printed within it? I'm just a newbie who enjoys looking through pocket change for obvious errors.

This looks like a stamping error, though it could also be some odd damage.
